How many Nm should the motor of my electric bicycle have?Updated 3 months ago
Think about the terrain on which you will mainly use your bike. Make your choice based on that and determine the required power of the motor of your e-bike!
If you mainly use the e-bike in the city and on flat terrain, a motor of up to 40/50 Nm is sufficient. These motors are not suitable for intensive hilly terrain, but perfect for the Dutch landscape. If you plan to tour a lot or ride over rolling terrain, check out the following categories.
In the countryside and rolling terrain
For this terrain, a motor with 40 to 60 Nm is ideal. Motors in this range are suitable for comfortable commutes on paved terrain and moderate slopes. A somewhat longer tour is also possible, but for more kilometers you need a larger battery capacity.
Tours
For tours, it is best to choose an e-bike with a torque between 60 and 75 Nm. These motors are popular among commuters because of their fast acceleration. Electric hybrid bicycles often fall into this category. E-bikes with a Bosch motor are examples of motors in this category.
For very sporty and long rides in the mountains you need an e-bike with a torque of 65 to 90. These motors are suitable for steep climbs and unpaved terrain. They are often used on touring bikes.
