How do I secure my bicycle safely?Updated 4 months ago
Step 1: Buy a Lock
It’s crucial to invest in a good lock, preferably a U-lock. It’s recommended to spend about 10% of your bike's value on a high-quality lock. A reliable lock proves its worth at the first theft attempt, even if you don’t notice it immediately because your bike remains secure.
Step 2: Lock Your Bike Properly
Buying a good lock is step one. Next, it’s important to lock your bike correctly.
Some essential tips:
- Lock your bike to a fixed and sturdy object, preferably in a busy and well-lit area if the bike is left outside at night.
- Secure the frame first, then the rear wheel, and lastly the front wheel.
- Try to hang the lock at least 50 cm above the ground and point it towards the ground.
- Always lock your bike, even during short stops or if it’s inside. Half of all bike thefts happen at home (in basements, garages, hallways, etc.).
- Consider standalone anti-theft systems for certain parts, such as the saddle or wheel axles.
- Always take the battery and/or screen with you if they are removable!
